A full house at SOTA’s (School of the Arts) Studio Theatre witnessed 13 teams pitching their unique solutions to solve SIA’s problem statements and two teams emerging as the winners for their category.

Held in collaboration with NUS Enterprise, the fifth edition of the App Challenge attracted over 1,600 participants in 528 teams from 74 countries. Launched as a local Singapore hackathon in 2015, this annual competition has since evolved into a global tech challenge.

The challenge is aimed at attracting innovators to come up with solutions that solve business challenges in areas such as enhancing our passengers’ on-ground, lounge and in-flight experiences, enabling our engineers to achieve higher productivity in aircraft maintenance, and increasing KrisShop’s presence in the online-to-offline (O2O) space.

After multiple rounds of screening, the 10 teams from the Startups & Innovators category and 3 from the Singapore Student category made it to the finals.

Setting the tone for the finale, Vice President Digital Innovation Jerome Thil said in his opening address: “It’s already an achievement when you made it to today’s grand finale. Do enjoy the presentations, have fun, get to know the people around here, engage in dialogue and share what you are doing. Make the most of your experience here today, and you shall only have good memories when you go back home.”

The judges had a hard time choosing the winners in each category. All teams came prepared and captivated the audience with their persuasive pitching and presentation styles. Winners of the SIA AppChallenge will be advancing to the Accelerator Programme!
